A Short History of DIRECTV

DIRECTV is an American based company that was launched on June 17th 1994. The company offers satellite television service to the United States, Latin America and Caribbean. Early on, Hughes attempted to launch a joint venture with NBC, News Corp, and Cablevision back in 1990. The joint venture for the first high power digital television service failed, after talks broke down. A separate division was created by Hughes and DIRECTV was born. Hughes and satellite broadcasting father, Stanley Hubbard of United States Satellite Broadcasting (USSB) joined forces to offer their two services with 175 channels from one orbital location. The FCC granted frequencies to Hughes and USSB from the 101 degree west satellite location.

On June 17th, 1994 DIRECTV and USSB services was launched for consumers. Thomson Consumer Electronics developed the direct broadcast satellite system under its subsidiary name RCA, while Digital Equipment Corporation manufactured the hardware. The small and lighter satellite antenna revolutionized the industry with a simple installation from anywhere as long as there was a view of the southern sky.

In 1998, USSB was acquired by DIRECTV in 1998 for $1.3 billion combining the two services. A year later a direct competitor PrimeStar was purchased increasing DIRECTV's overall market share. In 2000, General Motors held controlling interest in DIRECTV. It allowed Hughes to seek buyers for the company. After failed attempts early on from News Corporation and Echostar, General Motors share was eventually sold to News Corporation.

Beyond 2000

After rapid growth through acquisitions and superior service, Hughes Electronics decided to rename itself, "The DIRECTV Group, Inc. Hughes Electronics sold it's interest in PanAmSat and Hughes Network Systems to focus strictly on its satellite television services.

In 2004, DIRECTV abandoned its efforts in the Mexican market, while still controlling interest in Sky Mexico. The following year, DIRECTV dumped its relationship with audio provider Music Choice in favor of XM Satellite Radio.

In 2006, News Corporation announced its plans to transfer controlling interest in DIRECTV to Liberty Media for its own controlling interest in News Corporation. How To Watch Freeview TV in Bed As Well As On The Sofa

So your installer has selected the right aerial for you from the available aerials for Freeview. You've got your digital Freeview TV set up and connected to your Freeview aerial. You sit down on the sofa, snuggle up to your partner and enjoy your favourite programmes.

Can you Always Watch the Freeview TV you Want?

When it's time for the news, your partner wants to watch the new drama that's starting on another channel, or perhaps there's a really crucial football match that shouldn't be missed by just one of you. It's okay. You can go to bed early and watch whatever you want on the TV in your bedroom. But actually, you can't do that if you can't get Freeview TV on that set.

What about when your living room is crowded with your son's teenage friends watching the reality TV series you hate, and joining in with the shouts and jeers from the crowds on screen? Wouldn't you be happier if they were in another room altogether, so you could watch the Freeview channels you wanted in peace?

Did you Have a Multi-room System Installed With Your Freeview Aerial?

Unfortunately, unless your installers set up a multi-room system for your Freeview reception, with additional set top boxes for independent channel control where needed, your other TV sets still won't give you free view from your aerials for Freeview. The best way to get the multi-room TV system you want is to have an experienced Freeview aerial installer design and install it for you from the word go.

Get an Affordable Freeview Multi-room System Added

But if that didn't happen, all is not lost. There are a number of methods of connecting extra TV sets to aerials for Freeview. The simplest way is to add extra TV points and connect them to a central box in your loft, which is connected in turn to your free view aerial. You will also need a Freeview reception box for each TV set does not have Freeview built in. These cost from only $20 a box.

A reputable aerial Freeview installer will provide all this separately from the original installation, and you will be able to watch your own selection of Freeview channels wherever you have a television connected in your home. And with a digital Freeview aerial you will have a high quality of television picture all over your house. Watching TV from your bed will be a luxury you can enjoy whenever you like!

Chas Dutton has been in the Aerial installation business since 1970 & in Satellite installation since 1985. Chas has seen many changes in the TV Aerial & Satellite industry. Satellite TV - 8 Reasons It Is Better Than Ever

When people first started putting satellite TV systems in their homes, they were huge, bulky, expensive and extremely complicated. Today, there have been so many technological advances that satellite television is not only better than ever but its surpassed cable in virtually every respect as well. Here are just a few ways that it has gotten better over the years.

1. The huge eight foot dish that had to be constantly adjusted to watch different channels and had to be mounted on a huge concrete pad has been replaced with a small three foot, fixed position dish that is small and light enough to be mounted on a corner of your house.

2. Back in the day, you had one receiver for video, one receiver for audio and a controller box to move the dish, but today you only have one small box that does everything.

3. Before the advancements, you only had the ability to receive the national network feeds and the premium movie channels the cable company used and no local channels were available via satellite. On the whole, you could only pick up about 20 channels but today you've got the ability to pick up hundreds of channels from all over the world including international programming from over 20 different countries.

4. As a part of your packages not only do you get CD quality radio but you can also get SiriusXM satellite radio as well. This wasn't even an option for years.

5. New technology for the home has ushered in HD programming from satellite providers. Since cable companies have bandwidth limitations in their cables, many times the quality of the HD signal has to be degraded so everything will "fit". Satellite TV providers don't have those limitations so the HD quality you get from the reception is the best you will get short of Blu-Ray.

6. Today, with DVRs, companies have integrated the DVR into the receiver. These replace the old VCR's and integrates everything into one receiver so you don't have a shelf full of electronics on your home entertainment system.

7. One more technological advantage that's been included in the satellite box that simply didn't exist years ago is the Sling adaptor. This enables you to "sling" your TV package across the internet so you can watch your shows, your locals and the content on your DVR anywhere you have an internet connection. You can even watch your shows on a smart phone.

8. Perhaps the biggest advancement that satellite television has brought to your home is the cost. Instead of paying thousands of dollars for equipment and installation and paying hundreds of dollars for subscriptions, today, deals start as low as $20 per month and the equipment and installation is free.

With all the advances in technology over the last 30 years satellite TV has become the only real choice when you think about great home entertainment. Whether you love movies, have to have your sports or if you simply want to relax at night with TV you can afford, satellite is the way to go.

Your decision will be easy when choosing a provider by finding the best available satellite TV deals that are offered. Willis Vargas wanted to know what satellite TV packages he could get that had the channels he wanted.

Internet Television: Does DISH Network Have the Upper Hand?

Will internet television take consumers by storm? It may not be this year or next year but the transition is coming. I believe DISH Network may already have their foot in the door.

When I was younger, the internet was merely a place for the government and private business networks to communicate with each other. No access was given to the commercial public and the fact was, it was slow. During the 1990's, dramatic improvements in communications led to the standardization of the internet as we know it today. The internet is now open to the public, it's faster, more reliable and durable than it's ever been. In recent years, many television providers started upgrading their systems to fiber-optic networks. This should provide additional support for a more reliable faster internet and in some instances video and phone services as well. Overall, the internet industry is being overhauled. I believe the future of television will be standardized and in one way or another all data will be transmitted over the internet to some degree.

Like the internet, the television industry has evolved over the past few decades. From traditional television programming known as over-the-air that's distributed right to your television free of charge. To the 1980's when an alternative was introduced known as the cable company, under this service you paid for cable channels offered by your local cable provider. These companies laid a network around your neighborhood or commercial property. Several years down the road, Satellite Television provider DISH Network and DIRECTV paved the way to offer everyone the ability to have cable channels, this self-reliant satellite system receives signal anywhere in the United States as long as there's a clear view of the southern sky. Over the past decade satellite television has dominated the competition in terms of overall growth, reliability and customer satisfaction in the paid television service industry.

I see these industries evolving everyday, so what does this mean for the television and internet industry? With the internet and television (video) consumption widening, we can only speculate that the television industry will combine or conform to the internet and form a new video platform for pay TV providers. So, who's leading the charge towards internet television? I believe, DISH Network will play the largest role with the transition of internet television. It's been reported that DISH has approached several media companies about paid TV service being delivered over the internet. Opportunities like this may open the door for a more a la carte selection, choosing only the channels you want and leaving behind channels you don't want. With DISH Network recently buying some wireless spectrum, we expect the company to roll out some type of internet service of its own, that should help support its video streaming business. DISH Network already offers a variety of Internet Television with international programming. DISH Network customers currently have the ability to send their television service out over the internet directly from their High Definition Digital Video Recorder.

Video City is an Authorized Retailer in Arlington, Texas offering the latest deals in the television industry from Satellite TV Providers DISH Network and DIRECTV to Cable Companies such as Charter Communications and Time Warner Cable.
