Free Hulu Threat As They Lock Down Content For Pay Subscribers

The dream of a free TV service online has taken anotther knock, as plans are revealed that Hulu is looking towards authenticating their users. The plans will mean only getting access by providing a cable or satellite TV account number, in effect making users logon to see online TV.

Hulu looking to ease out freeloaders?

The story was broken by the New York Post, who say that Hulu are looking to possibly change their business model, restricting free content and making users either pay or confirm they subscribe to pay-TV. There are rumors that the recent (as yet unconfirmed) sale by Providence Equity Partners, of their 10% stake in Hulu may be linked to the possible move.

It seems a scandal that Hulu which was designed as a free catch-up TV service , allowing viewers to watch shows on-demand which were originally broadcast free, are now to be charged for. Especially as they already have a pay model in Hulu Plus that could be used for any premium content.

On the flip side, it is only to be expected that as Hulu is owned by the very people that make viewers pay to see content (NBC, Fox and ABC), they will want to leverage some more cash and at the same time, try to kill off the rise in cord cutting.

BBC Newsroom Refurbished And Turns Russian

The BBC’s long-standing ‘Broadcasting House’ building in London (England) has applied its new reformatted IPTV broadcasting equipment to practical use for the first time, with a slightly unusual choice of tenant taking over the first live output.

Given a multi-million pound refurbishment following the BBC’s decision to move most direct studio TV-based operations from London to Salford (England), the former main newsroom, used mainly for the BBC News channel and daily news shows on the organisation’s regular channels, has now been redesigned (including the building of a new wing) for the BBC World Service to broadcast internationally and online, as well as for supported networks.

This was proven last night, as ‘BBC Russian’ issued a live ten-minute news bulletin from newly-developed areas of New Broadcasting House, with the footage airing on partner channel Dozhd TV, a Moscow (Russia)-based 24-hour IPTV channel, which (have previously and will continue to do so in its new base) aired live on weekdays at 4pm & 8pm (Moscow time).

It is the BBC’s first-ever IPTV broadcast live and produced solely for that purpose, and was also viewable through the official device-based app of Dozhd TV. Technical service provider Celebro Media Networks was on-hand to help develop the online format, complete with on-site training for BBC Russian editors teams in the live gallery and TV workflows.

Calebro head ‘IPTV consultant’ Wesley Dodd, present for the 10-minute broadcast, said of the launch: “All the team worked so hard to bring us to this pioneering moment. It felt like a milestone in the history of broadcasting as we produced and delivered the live news bulletin as an IPTV operation from the BBC’s new Broadcasting House for the first time.”

This marks the introduction of the new wing (which also retains ‘many important historical elements’ of the 80-year-old building), which will see a number of BBC World Service broadcasting teams move in ‘over the coming year’, while the first to actually broadcast with the new facilities will be forever known as Dozhd TV, who see a monthly online audience of just over 500,000. Freeview Decade Survey Claims Royal Inspiration

In a recent survey conducted by digital terrestrial broadcaster Freeview (UK), it was found that, amongst other popular opinions, Simon Cowell’s talent contest Britain’s Got Talent was listed as the region’s favourite TV show of the past 10 years, beating out the return of BBC franchise Doctor Who.

However, the study, which interviewed 2,000 UK adults on their opinions of TV between 2002-2012 (which would be considered odd by many until they realise the purpose of Freeview celebrating a decade since their initial launch), did not end with a simple ‘favourite TV show’ question, with the highlight of the results release by Freeview being the discovery of what was voted as ‘most uplifting TV moment’ of the period.

Of all the options that could have been chosen, it was one obviously fairly fresh in the minds of most people surveyed that won the voting in this department, as it was the live ’balcony kiss’ following the Royal Wedding last year, that took first place, said to be just ahead of the England rugby team’s fly-half Johnny Wilkinson scoring a last-second drop goal to win the Rugby World Cup in 2003 against host nation Australia.

Amongst other ‘moments’ (selected from across all genres including scripted programming, soap operas, reality TV, documentaries, and sport) were popular highlights from series such as EastEnders, Doctor Who, The Office, Formula One, and Only Fools and Horses. The top 20 list in full can be seen at the bottom of the page.

Meanwhile, Freeview used the survey to take the opportunity to see popular opinion on the state of the TV industry in the region, with results including that around 20% of those questioned believe that British TV has ‘never been better’, while ’33%’ believe it to be ‘the best in the world’. Other results included that it is a minority of people who now prefer live TV content ahead of ’on-demand’ or ‘timeshift’ methods, as nearly 30% claimed to support the more linear and traditional approach over the newer ones.

Impressionist and comedian Jon Culshaw, who presents a new online browser game (The Genirosity Game) on the Freeview website that celebrates their 10 years in action, said of the results of the uplifting TV survey: “Everyone loves getting the flags out and having a do for a good old royal wedding. We love a memorable sporting triumph or wondrous wildlife spectacle. So it’s no surprise that they’re all over the list of the nation’s most uplifting TV moments. Here’s to another ten years of uplifting telly.”

The Voice UK Plans Disconnection And Format Changes

Producers of The Voice UK on BBC1 are said to be planning a number of changes to the format of the show, following a small ratings drop for this weekend’s first round of live shows.

Recording an average of 9.33m (41.8%) compared to Britain’s Got Talent‘s 9.67m (41.8%) on ITV1, staff on the BBC1 show are reportedly thinking up new ways to improve their live show format after just one week of it.

In the form of the American version of the franchise, the four ‘coaches’ (will.i.am., Jessie J, Sir Tom Jones, and Danny O’Donoghue) will now no longer perform together at the start of the show, instead singing with their own acts, while future guest stars will also be invited to sing alongside the remaining contestants.

Meanwhile, in moves that could be seen as mimicking the success of The X Factor, coaches have been asked to show more criticism and cruelty (as well as remembering the contestant’s names), and the introduction of ’double eliminations’.

A show source said of the early revamp: “The BBC know that The Voice is liked by fans but the first live show didn’t quite go as planned. They’re ordering a shake-up because they cannot afford to lose viewers.”

Meanwhile, show coach will.i.am has been criticised by the BBC for his ‘unprofessional’ decision to text live on air, though the American rapper insists that he was merely attempting to connect with viewers via Twitter. He took to the social networking site twice in the weekend to claim that the situation had been taken out of proportion, writing: “If you saw me on my phone I wasn’t being rude… I was connecting to people watching. TV, phone, laptop, & tablet… its a new day… if I don’t tweet during live TV I’m not connecting to people watching in the new way.”

The series is scheduled to continue weekly through to June with 7 live show weeks, with only the dates of 26 & 27 July being taken off-schedule to avoid a clash with BBC1's coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest. While the show will be likely to create talking points on Twitter, such conversations will be more likely to occur if the stars are actually doing something as opposed to trying to talk to them…

Internet TV Grows While Traditional Viewing Drops – Report

The rise in popularity of internet TV and video-on-demand is affecting traditional TV viewing says a report from Nielsen. But the old fashioned gogglebox is still dominating consumers viewing time, for now at least.

Traditional TV still the boss

The 2011, Q4, “cross-platform” report shows the effect of view TV and video content across the many screens now available, and watching traditional television dropped for the third consecutive quarter showing the trend is moving away from that medium. Compared to the previous fourth quarter in 2010, when 289.3 million watched, the figures for the fourth quarter in 2011 was 284.4 million.

When it came to the amount of time spent watching TV, there was also a decline. The average time spent watching traditional TV monthly was 153 hours and 19 minutes, q drop from the previous years fiure of 154 hours and 05 minutes.

When it came to alternative sources of watching TV, the report looked at internet TV, timeshifted content and videos watched on a mobile phone, these have all consistently grown in the last 2 years.

The report showed that for internet video was watched by 147.4 million, a rise from 141.4 million the previous quarter, timeshifters reached 113.5 million in number from 105.9 million. Watching TV on mobile phone reached 33.5 million compared to 24.7 million the previous year.

Although watching the standard TV dropped, recorded content rose. Timeshifted TV viewing was on average 11 hours and 44 minutes monthly, a rise from 10 hours and 27 minutes in Q4 2010.

So no real surprises, everyone loves watching the big screen TV, the average American watches almost 5 hours of video every day and most of that time (98%) is still in front of a TV set. But as more avenues open, and viewers get used to the new technology, internet tv viewing will continue to grow.

BBC Dictate On Sacha’s Promotional Choices

Comedy actor Sacha Baron Cohen, ahead of the cinematic release of his latest film The Dictator, is going around the world on talkshows to promote his latest potential blockbuster as most actors normally do, but in the nature of the English star, he likes to appear ‘in character’, as previously witnessed at The Oscars earlier this year. However, his latest creation ‘General Aladeen’ might not get to have much of that treatment if Baron Cohen is to do a show on the BBC, after they banned him from appearing on any of the corporation’s TV or radio shows as his fictional dictator.

The movie, which is more scripted and ‘cinematic’ than past controversial ’mockumentaries’ such as Borat and Bruno, stars Baron Cohen as General Aladeen, the dictator of the fictitious ‘Republic of Wadiya’, who ‘risks his life to ensure that democracy will never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed’. It is currently scheduled for a premiere on 11 May (USA), and release on 16 May (worldwide).

For this reason of proximity to release, a number of chatshows such as The Graham Norton Show, Newsnight, The Andrew Marr Show, and The One Show, were said to be in discussions to bring Sacha Baron Cohen onto their show in-character, but have all reportedly backed down based on requests from BBC head offices, a move which carried over to radio stations BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 4 making similar refusals to feature him, although no clear reason has yet been given for the decision.

A source of the actor said of the BBC: “Everyone came back and said they were declining to have him in character on air. Sacha suspects it’s a case of a sense of humour bypass.”

Meanwhile, Baron Cohen got back into costume to complain about the broadcaster, with ‘General Aladeen’ adding: “While I am a huge admirer of state-sponsored censorship, the BBC banning me from their meagre channels is an outrage. Why are they victimising little old me?”

A BBC spokesman has responded by stating on behalf of the TV and radio stations involved: “Our chatshows thrive on the spontaneous banter between guests and the presenter, something you don’t get when people come on as characters. We’d love to have Sacha on as himself.”

While it is not the first time this year that Baron Cohen’s fourth persona has been barred from entry, the much-publicised arguments ahead of The Oscars ended with a compromise that saw General Aladeen spill ‘Kim Jong-il’s ashes’ on E!’s red carpet reporter Ryan Seacrest. With past incidents in mind, what are the chances of the BBC backing down on their current refusal?

The Pirate Bay Could Get Blocked In

The High Court has released a controversial ruling that major internet service providers (ISP’s) in the UK are now legally required to block access to Swedish torrent directory website The Pirate Bay.

The site has been the the subject of a number of headlines in recent times, due to its status as one of the best-known websites that provides links towards downloads of pirated versions of online video and music, amongst other content.

The announcement follows on from one in February made in favour of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), made to prevent them from losing potential earnings for content creators and official providers (including the music artists themselves) to The Pirate Bay.

It has been determined that as of 30 April, five leading UK ISP’s (Everything Everywhere, O2, Sky, TalkTalk, and Virgin Media) are obliged to place official blocks from accessing The Pirate Bay through their servers. It is believed that another major ISP, British Telecom (BT) have requested ‘a few more weeks to further consider its position’ on the matter.

The BPI said of their victory, and their opinion on The Pirate Bay: “The High Court has confirmed that The Pirate Bay infringes copyright on a massive scale. Its operators line their pockets by commercially exploiting music and other creative works without paying a penny to the people who created them. This is wrong – musicians, sound engineers and video editors deserve to be paid for their work just like everyone else.”

While all major ISP’s had previously been asked to block The Pirate Bay on their own accord, all had replied that they would not do so until they were asked by the courts, but advised that even those measure would not work long-term, as a Virgin Media spokesperson recently explained: “As a responsible ISP, Virgin Media complies with court orders addressed to the company but strongly believes that changing consumer behaviour to tackle copyright infringement also needs compelling legal alternatives, such as our agreement with Spotify, to give consumers access to great content at the right price.”

As many people complain that the court-mandated ‘block’ approach will not affect the people willing to go through alternative means to get to a blocked website, the fact that this matter has gone to court on the request of a high-profile representative organisation such as BPI is not a positive situation for any regular internet user. Will this case end up going in a similar direction to that of Australian ISP iiNet?
