Amazon Plans Auditions For Original Programming Development

Amazon have revealed through their Amazon Studios division their plans to create original comedy and kids shows for their ‘Amazon Instant Video‘ online streaming service, and have literally opened up the start-up process in a unique manner.

The plans for the new show process will see filmmakers, show writers, and animators from around the world invited to send in their ideas for a show, which if good enough, are then carried over to focus group discussion. Amazon have promised that one project each month is to be added to their ‘development slate’ and the audience testing phase. If a show is deemed good enough to go into production as a full online series, Amazon claim they will grant the show’s creator(s) $55,000, along with bonuses and royalties including 5% of all show merchandising profits sold in the flagship online store.

Amazon Studios director Roy Price said of the ‘audition’-style process for finding original series for their streaming service: “Amazon Studios wants to discover great talent and produce programming that audiences will love. In the course of developing movies, we’ve heard a lot of interest from content creators who want to develop original series in the comedy and children’s genres. We are excited to bring writers, animators and directors this new opportunity to develop original series.”

The ‘rules’ of the submission process include that the project must feature a 5-page description of the show, alongside a pilot episode script (22 minutes for sitcoms, 11 minutes for children’s shows).

The website of Amazon Studios (with the ‘new series development branch of the company led by experienced TV executives Joe Lewis and Tara Sorensen, with a respective background of ‘comedy’ and ‘children’s shows’) will also offer a ‘renewal’ offering, meaning that before 45 days of project submission is complete, Amazon can choose to extend their ‘option’ on the project in exchange for $10,000 or an invitation to work with the creator more closely on the plans. The site also has plans of a ‘community’ ethos, permitting users to keep their project listed on the site for free in order to gain feedback from general browsers.

It is a strange approach to bringing in new shows, and it seems as though the online angle helps such innovations. The news could be followed by more original content creation as was let slip by an Amazon employee, but for this approach, will any other major producer ever decide to be this open with their selection process?
