Daniel Radcliffe Takes On Sky Arts Lead

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has been lined up for his first-ever headlining TV role, as he goes alongside Jon Hamm (Mad Men) for a new TV drama on Sky’s Sky Arts channel.

In what will be the oddest kind of departure from the supernatural worlds of wizadry (Harry Potter) and haunted houses (The Woman in Black), Radcliffe is due to play a lead member of a Russian doctor team during World War I in a show that will feature ‘dark and humorous elements’.

The format of the new series will see Hamm play the same man during the character’s ’later years’, narrating the series as well as ‘interacting’ with the younger version of the character in select scenes. The show has been confirmed as airing on a four-episode run, while the main theme has been announced as the doctor battles with ‘self-esteem issues’ as well as doubt in his ability to treat his patients.

A channel source said of the new show: “This is a great role for Daniel and he’s pretty excited about the prospect of working with Jon. He’s a big Mad Men fan and feels he can learn a lot from ‘Don’. But Jon knows all about Daniel’s qualities, too, so he’ll also be doing some learning.”

While it will be seen by many as somewhat of a step down for Radcliffe by going from Hollywood (though he is currently working on 2013 film Kill Your Darlings) to a lesser-known satellite network, will his name provide a magic ratings boost for the channel’s new four-parter?
