In a move eerily similar to that of the launch of the recent announcement of the ‘South Park On-Demand’ service, MTV (UK) have revealed their own on-demand service in a near-identical manner and structure.
Releasing ‘MTV On-Demand’, channel owners Viacom are offering select offerings of the network’s hit shows, as fans are encouraged to purchase temporary online passes for unlimited access to the content. The rates of this service (alongside the amount of content offered) are also identical to its South Park counterpart, with users able to buy passes for either £2 (for 1 day) or £3 (a full week).

Accessible through a number of devices, the service will include recent episodes (online within 24 hours of first broadcast) and popular on-demand archives, of local MTV programming such as Geordie Shore and My Super Sweet 16 UK, and imported shows such as Jersey Shore and I Just Want My Pants Back, amongst others.
The plans also mean that Viacom International’s SVP of digital content Philip O’Ferrall has commented on the announcement of two similar services within the same week, as he said of the MTV release: ”Today’s MTV generation is connected and ‘always on’. The new catch-up service makes our content more accessible and ensures that our fans will never miss an episode of their favourite MTV show.”
With the very large number of similarities between the South Park and MTV on-demand UK service launches unsurprising considering the Viacom-owned connection, which service will produce the bigger impact in the regional online market – a larger selection of content from an established animated show, or partial offerings from an entire network’s backlog?
