Private Practice In Private Talks For ABC Final Season

ABC are said to be in discussion with the production team of medical drama Private Practice to sign a renewal deal for a final sixth season, contrary to popular belief that the show would be ending with the final episode of its fifth season this month.

While the renewal is not expected to be a big one, fans of the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off hoping that it will not be over soon could have a temporary reprieve with rumours that their will be 13 new episodes in the planned last run, although this could be boosted to 18 or 22 episodes should headlining star Kate Walsh renew her contract past 13.

The proposed move is thought to be the result of an increase in ratings for the show, with a recent seasonal high of an average of 8.35m viewers during a new Tuesday night slot. A final decision is expected to be made by the network on Private Practice (as well as other shows Body of Proof and GCB) after running through pilots of potential new original shows, which include action drama Last Resort, period drama Gilded Lilys (from Private Practice creator Shonda Rhimes), an Only Fools and Horses remake, and Devious Maids.

Private Practice‘s KaDee Strickland (who plays ‘Charlotte King’), recently said of the show’s prospects, while hinting at the style of the season finale on 15 May: “Because of the way the show ends this season, it feels to me that a renewal would best serve us. It’s a hell of an ending. I’m not one to sit around and look for the worst case scenario. We should sort of anticipate good news.”

Potentially taking the series to 110 episodes or beyond, will the spin-off leave with a strong legacy and more complete ending?
