The original Google TV platform had a rough ride into the market, but after taking stock and looking at the options available, Google are relaunching the platform with the help of LG electronics.
LG to launch new Google powered TV setThe South Korea company that manufacturer phones and smart TV sets are said to be launching a Google powered TV set later this month.
The report in Reuters, says that LG want to get a bigger slice of the growing internet TV market, and are hedging their bets with two different operating systems. A proportion of their sets will still run on the NetCast platform and some with the new Google TV operating system.
The vice president of LG, Ro Seogho has revealed that buyers in the US can get their hands on a Google TV set from May 21.
Google TV was an early pioneer of the Smart TV service and offered internet services along with TV viewing at the same time, offering online video, search and other downloadable apps on a TV set.
The Google TV platform is in it’s second generation after the first attempt was derailed after problems getting video content, lack of support from hardware companies and negative customer feedback. The search giant are hoping the new Google TV V.2 will have a similar success to the Android platform on the mobile phone and tablet market.
LG are currently concentrating on their popular 3D Smart TV sets, and have grabbed around 15% of the growing 3D market.
while Google hopes Google TV will do for the TV market what Android did for the mobile market, it’s been plagued with problems like high prices, low sales, and difficulty with program distribution.
The biggest rival of LG, Samsung Electronics are also set to launch their own Google TV based TV set this year, as the Smart TV battle rages on.
