While Hulu recently announced their plans to make all potential users show proof of membership to a cable or satellite TV service before permitting entry, linear TV network CBS have claimed that they might be interested at forming content partnerships with the online service.
It is thought that CBS are using the news of Hulu becoming a more ‘controlled’ online service as incentive to finally throw their hat into the ring on Hulu with more committed deals (compared to going through their co-owned subsidiary The CW) after a long time of deriding the decisions of other companies to sign content deals.
The network are known for high-profile scripted series such as Two and a Half Men, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, How I Met Your Mother, and Hawaii Five-0, so a potential move of licencing in broadcast network content could be a big draw for Hulu.
CBS president/CEO Leslie Moonves said of the plans: “We will take a look at it under the authentication model [of Hulu]. Right now we are very pleased with our digital strategy without Hulu. We are doing extremely well being nonexclusive with the Netflix and the Amazon deals and, more importantly, with our CBS.com site, where we keep 100 per cent, 100 cents on the dollar. We will, of course, have a conversation with them (an authentication-focused Hulu). On the CW side, we are doing business with Hulu Plus right now. So we do talk to them, but right now we are very happy with our strategy.”
While a further deal with CBS would not nesecarrily be vital for Hulu, who as well as producing original series, also feature licenced content from the likes of Fox, ABC, NBC, and Nickelodeon, it would be seen as a potential boost if they can find the right price, but will their potential audience be locked out under the online streamer’s new proposals?
